Raphaella Spence
From Rome to New York
10 September — 10 October, 2026
Louis K. Meisel Gallery is pleased to present a new selection of photorealist paintings by Raphaella Spence in the exhibit From Rome to New York. This new exhibit showcases the scenic diversity of Spence’s chromatic world and bridges several series, which include aerial views of the iconic New York City skyline, classical Roman architecture, and the calming harbors of Zurich.
As a digital age Photorealist, Spence is a virtuoso in spatial and optical extravagance. Veering away from quotidian scenes, she captures brilliant skies, cityscapes, and sweeping vistas with unprecedented clarity. The abundance of detail requires close inspection yet maintains a powerful atmospheric palpability from a distance.
A defining feature of the exhibition is her treatment of water. In Spence’s utopia, harbors, rivers, and lakes become mirrors that enrich the world’s colorful complexities; reflections ripple across the canvas, capturing shifting light and luminous ambiences. Through months of patience and a methodic studio practice, Spence creates masterful pieces that reveal the artist’s exceptional command of observation and technique.
Her depictions of historical architecture, global waterways, and renowned cities urge the viewer to redefine the lived experience of cultural nomadism.
Spence was born in London, England and currently lives and works in Italy. In 1999, Spence held her first solo exhibition in Italy, and in 2003, she exhibited in New York in her first solo show at Louis K. Meisel Gallery. Starting in 2012, Spence took part in an international museum tour that began at the Kunsthalle Tübingen Museum in Germany and continued with 10 international museums. Since 2022, her paintings have been acquired by the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, the Parrish Art Museum, and Museum Frieder Burda.
From Rome to New York offers viewers an opportunity to tour the world through the eyes of a painter whose mastery of light, architecture, and reflection has established her as a distinctive voice in contemporary Photorealism. From Rome to New York is on view at Louis K. Meisel Gallery from September 10 through October 10, 2026. For further information, please contact gallery@meisels.com
